Contrary to rumours making rounds on social media, the spiritual leader of Shiites, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has not died in detention.

Rumours emerged on Thursday that El-Zakzaky had died in detention, but latest news on El-Zakzaky has it that the rumour is untrue. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) describes the social media rumour about the death of the leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) as untrue and malicious.

El Zakzaky’s followers on Thursday had expressed fears that their spiritual leader will die in police detention, a claim which was quickly followed by unconfirmed rumours of his death later on Thursday.

You will recall that Shiites protesting the continued detention of their leader had clashed with security forces in Kaduna on Monday, with three people, including a policeman, reportedly injured.
