nupengThe Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige, promised to implement the agreements reached at the parley between NUPENG and other stakeholders.

Present there were representatives of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) who had earlier threatened a 3-day warning strike.

So also were representatives of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The minister, whose role was mediatory, noted that past agreements have been made and not complied with. He, however, promised that this one would not go the way of the others as the terms would help in finding a lasting solution to the perennial industrial crisis in the sector.

He said that the meeting was to stave off the “pending strike by NUPENG and PENGASSAN.’’

He appealed to the striking bodies to call off their strike in order to create an enabling environment for discussions.

On his part, Mr Olabode Johnson, President of PENGASSAN, brought up the inherent lack of trust in the accord as he pointed to other such agreements that were not enforced nor complied with.

“These oil companies have refused to respect the agreements reached between the Federal Government and the unions.

“So, for this meeting to be fruitful there must be some level of compliance because PENGASSAN has also issued an ultimatum, which was also put on hold at the instance of this meeting.

“If we are not fully satisfied at the end of this meeting then we have to go back and re-issue the ultimatum,’’ he said.

The industrial action is in protest to cases of massive staff retrenchment, anti-labour activities, non-implementation of collective agreements, insecurity in the Niger Delta, deplorable state of roads leading to refineries among others.
