Nigerian Olympic team striker Orji Okonkwo is confident the Dream Team VII will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Concise News reports.
Concise News had reported that Nigeria will begin their quest for the ticket to the Tokyo when they face the Ivory Coast in their first match at the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.
Nigeria are the defending champions of the competition and are in Group B (Ivory Coast Zambia and South Africa) which serves as the qualifiers for the male football event of the Olympics.
While speaking ahead of the tie with the West Africans, Okonkwo admitted that get a win against Didier Drogba’s countrymen will be a boost for them.
“Of course, we are ready and as you know, it is the desire of all the teams to win the tournament,” he said.
“But there is no two ways about it, we have to do everything possible to ensure that we get the ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”
“We know this is not going to be an easy competition and the most important thing is that we have to work very hard.
“Football is a game of luck sometimes but we can be lucky only if we work very hard.”
He added: “We have to be very confident going into the competition and personally, I’m happy to have been selected by the coaches.
“I’ll do my best to ensure we get a ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”
After the tie with Ivory Coast, Nigeria will on Tuesday, November 12 take on Zambia before a face-off with South Africa three days later, November 15th.
