Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets crashed out of the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup on Wednesday after losing 3-1 to The Netherlands in the Round of 16.

Concise News reports that at the Estádio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico in Brazil, a Sontje Hansen treble sent the Europeans through to the last-eight.

The Ajax Amsterdam U19 star gave the Dutch an early lead in the 4th minute.

Olakunle Junior Olusegun then restored parity for the Africans in the 12th minute.

However, the balance would be short-lived as Hansen scored again just three minutes later. The Eaglets failed to deal with a loose ball in their area allowing The Netherlands’ goal.

The first half ended with Nigeria creating superior shots while their opponents were slightly better in possession.

When the second half resumed, Hansen, 17, completed his hat-trick from the spot 10 minutes from normal time after Ferdinand Ikenna was penalised for handling the ball inside the penalty area.

Nigeria had lost their last Group B game to Australia last week but still finished as group winners while their European opponents qualified as one of the best losers in the preliminary stage.

With five titles since the tournament began in 1985, no other nation has won the age-grade competition more than Africa’s most populous nation.

With their win over Nigeria, The Netherlands join Korea Republic who became the first team to reach the quarter-finals after seeing off another African side, Angola.
