Social media platform Twitter has said it would ban political adverts worldwide on its platform following growing concerns over misinformation from politicians.
Concise News understands that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter Jack Dorsey said this in a tweet on Wednesday.
According to him, the ban on political advertising is to save the company from potential issues from “machine learning-based optimization of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes.”
He said: “We considered stopping only candidate ads, but issue ads present a way to circumvent.
“Additionally, it isn’t fair for everyone but candidates to buy ads for issues they want to push. So we’re stopping these too.”
He added that details of the new policy which would ban ads on political issues and from candidates will be unveiled next month.
This is coming as Facebook is under intense pressure to apply fact-checking to politicians doing ads with debunked claims.
