Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has expressed his disappointment at the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu’s response to sex for grade scandal in higher institutions.
Concise News reports that this follows a documentary by the BBC at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where a lecturer Boniface Igbeneghu was caught on camera allegedly demanding for sex for grades.
In the 13-minute secret filming, the lecturer with the Faculty of Arts revealed how his colleagues sleep with female students for sex.
Well, after a long silence from Adamu in addressing the issue, he has advised female students to stop going to lecturers unnecessarily, warning them against harassing their lecturers.
The minister gave the advice on Tuesday at the unveiling of a policy document against sexual harassment by the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) where he was represented by an Assistant Director, Tertiary Education Department in the Ministry, Ijeoma Duru.
“Girls should read their books and be able to defend their certificates and as such, make them less vulnerable to sexual predators.
“They (female students) should stop going to lecturers unnecessarily and also should not harass their lecturers,” he said.
In his reaction, Seun who is the son of late Fela Kuti criticised the advise on his Twitter handle, saying it was irrelevant to the issue.
According to the Kuti, Nigerians never expected his ‘yeye advice’ saying the minister is not revealing what the government plans to do about the sex for grades situation.
He wrote “Oga Adamu Adamu wen we d people say we dey wait for govt response on d sex for grade scandal, no b say we expect u to come dey abuse our young girls abi mke u come dey give dem yeye advise, wat we wan hear na govt position on d sex for grade scandal and wetin govt go do”
“Now we see why e take u very long time oga Adamu Adamu as d minister of education to respond to dis sex for grade scandal, na bcus u no get any idea on wat to do, yur only idea na to give yeye advise say mke our young grils no dey go see lecturers unnecessary, is dat yur policy?”
“Oga Adamu Adamu set up an independent panel wey go include parents, lecturers, students, etc to investigate dis sex for grade in all our unis. dey will be able to tell u der findings and recommend beta harassment policy for all our unis”
