Kogi Prison Escape: How 227 Inmates Escaped, Over 100 Re-arrested

An early morning downpour in Koton-Karfe, Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State, has led to the escape of about 227 prisoners from a federal correctional centre.

The Monday heavy downpour resulted in the flood which caused some parts of the correctional centre including the fence to cave in, thereby giving room for escape.

100 of the inmates have been rearrested, while unspecified number voluntarily returned.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Jafar Ahmed, confirmed the story while speaking with newsmen in Koton Kafe on Monday.

He said some of the inmates returned to the centre on their own volition while others were recaptured by security agents.

“As at 3:00 am the flood started and as at 5:00 am the prisoners were able to escape.” Read more here.

INEC Meets With Political Parties Ahead Of Kogi, Bayelsa Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday met with political parties in Abuja.

The meeting which is held quarterly is in preparations towards the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections slated to hold in November.

The meeting also reviewed the performances of political parties during the elections and provide solutions to issues raised.

It will be recalled that there had been some agitations among political parties about the call to scrap parties that failed to elect at least a candidate during the last elections. Read more here.
