Russia Helped Nigeria Defeat Biafra During Civil War, Buhari Recalls

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed how Russia helped Nigeria defeat Biafra during the nation’s civil war between 1967 and 1970.

Buhari said this during his speech at the Russia-Africa Summit in Sochi, Russia, on Thursday.

According to Buhari, Nigeria’s relationship with Russia began in 1960 with the old Soviet Union, saying that Russia helped Nigeria with military assistance during the civil war against the Biafran forces.

“Nigeria’s relations with Russia just like the rest of Africa began during the Soviet era when diplomatic relations were first established in 1960. That relationship covered areas such as education, healthcare, solid minerals development and military assistance, especially during Nigeria’s civil war,” he said. Read more here.

Eze Gideon Ejike, the traditional ruler of Orlu in Imo state, has reportedly appealed to the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to allow the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to return to Nigeria for the burial of his mother.

Kanu had announced the death of his mother, Ugoeze Sally Nmeme, on Sunday, October 22. She was said to have died in Germany on 30 August.

But it is uncertain whether the pro-Biafra activist would return to Nigeria to attend the burial of his late mother after he jumped bail by sneaking out of the country in late 2017 when the Nigerian Army was carrying out Operation Python Dance in the southeast. Read more here.
