A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Attahiru Jega has said the country may break up if the electoral process is not strengthened.
Concise News understands that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had predicted that Nigeria could break up in 2015 in the lead up to the general elections.
However, that did not happen after Muhammadu Buhari defeated the then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan to win the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking on Wednesday at a conference on “20 Years of Democracy,” Jega warned that the West African nation could still break up.
“The CIA thought that 2015 was the do-or-die period for Nigeria, that there would not be a Nigeria in the way you know after the 2015 general elections,” he said.
“That has come and passed but I think if we do not take care, a lot of these predictions will come to pass.
“That is why we need to do quite a lot, much more than we have ever done in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process before 2023.”
