It is only restructuring that will make Nigeria not disintegrate, according to a former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode.
Fani-Kayode who is a chieftain of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) noted this on Thursday.
He spoke following the alarm raised by former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Attahiru Jega that the country might break up.
The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had predicted that Nigeria could break up in 2015 in the lead up to the general elections.
However, that did not happen after Muhammadu Buhari defeated the then-incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, to win the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking on Wednesday at a conference on “20 Years of Democracy,” Jega warned that the West African nation could still break up.
“The CIA thought that 2015 was the do-or-die period for Nigeria, that there would not be a Nigeria in the way you know after the 2015 general elections,” he said.
“That has come and passed but I think if we do not take care, a lot of these predictions will come to pass.
“That is why we need to do quite a lot, much more than we have ever done in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process before 2023.”
Buhari Critic Proffers Solution
Reacting to the former INEC boss’ comment, Fani-Kayode, in a tweet on his handle, said Nigeria’s disintegration was certain.
However, he noted that it is only when people from southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt are treated rightly that the country will stay as one.
“If we don’t take care, the CIA’s prediction that Nigeria will disintegrate will soon come to pass” -Prof. Jega,” he wrote.
“Nothing can stop it. It is only a question of time. If you want us to stay one then restructure the country and stop treating southerners & Middle Belters like slaves.”
