Manchester United and Liverpool square up against each other at Old Trafford on Sunday in the English Premier League (EPL), Concise News reports.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be hoping to extend their eight-point lead at the top of the table, while also looking to increase the widening gap between themselves and United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men desperately need points having failed to win any of their last three league games, but Liverpool are perhaps the worst possible opponent to face given their current form.
Manchester United vs Liverpool Preview
Liverpool have elite finishers. Manchester United do not..
Part of United’s scoring issues revolve around their shot selection. They are not creating easy chances within the 18 yard box.
Throwing out the anomaly of their first match against Chelsea, United’s most similar opponents to Liverpool this season have been Arsenal (1-1 draw) and Leicester (1-0 win).
Against Arsenal, they took 3 shots from within 18 yards. Against Leicester, they had 4 from within 18. One of those was from the spot, which Marcus Rashford converted for the win.
Liverpool’s shot charts…look…much…different.
Occasionally, Scott McTominay creates a moment of brilliance and scores from outside the 18. More often though, McTominay doesn’t get a shot on target.
Liverpool dribble into the attacking third more. They complete more passes in the attacking third. And they finish more of those chances.
Sometimes, it is not any more complicated than that.
Man United Team News
Solskjaer has confirmed David de Gea and Paul Pogba won’t be available to face Liverpool at the weekend.
United look to end their winless run.
David De Gea was substituted with injury during the international break with Spain while Paul Pogba was in Dubai continuing his recovering from a problem.
Solskjaer confirmed both would miss the weekend’s fixture. He said on Pogba: “He had a scan after the Arsenal game and maybe needed a few weeks’ rest in a boot so hopefully he won’t be too long, but he won’t make this game, no. David needs a scan.
“I think he’ll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s just one of those things.”
Liverpool Team News
For Liverpool, they receive a boost with Joel Matip’s return to training alongside Alisson Becker.
The Cameroonian centre-back picked up a knock against Sheffield United on September 28, ruling him out of games against Salzburg and Leicester City.
The Reds confirmed Matip took part in training on Wednesday, putting him in contention to face United.
The game could also see Alisson return to the pitch having been out with a calf injury since the opening Premier League game of the season against Norwich.
Jurgen Klopp could pick both for the trip to Old Trafford, meaning Adrian and Dejan Lovren could drop out of the side that beat the Foxes before the international break.
The Reds are looking to maintain their win streak with one more victory set to take them level with Manchester City on 18 successive wins – a Premier League record.
