Kogi, Bayelsa Elections: INEC Reveals When Voter Register Will Be Published

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that it will on Monday, October 14, publish the register of voters in Kogi and Bayelsa for the November 16 governorship elections in the two states.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja.

Okoye said that the electoral body would also present the voter register to all the political parties sponsoring candidates for the polls in line with Section 20 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

According to him, the events, which would take place at the commission’s offices in Lokoja and Yenagoa, would be presided over by the Supervising National Commissioners and assisted by the Resident Electoral Commissioners of the respective states. Read more here.

Court Fixes Date For Ruling On Exclusion Of Akpoti From Kogi Election

The Federal High Court, Abuja has fixed Oct. 22 for ruling on an application filed by the Social Democratic Party governorship candidate, Natasha Akpoti, challenging her exclusion from the Nov. 16 governorship election in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to INEC, Akpoti was disqualified for choosing Mohammed Yakubu, whom it described as underaged, as her running mate in the forthcoming election.

When the matter was called on Wednesday, Counsel to Akpoti, Ola Olanipekun (SAN) prayed the court to grant an order directing INEC to recognise her as the SDP candidate. Read more here.

INEC Deploys 26,000 Ad Hoc Staff For Kogi, Bayelsa Poll

No fewer than 26,000 ad hoc staff have been deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Nov. 16, Kogi and Bayelsa governorship poll.

This was disclosed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu during a visit to the commission’s office at Koton-Karfe in Kogi on Thursday.

“I want to tell you that for the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship poll, each of the 26,000 school staff that will work on Election Day is going to receive a letter of appointment.

“That letter will among other things give a detailed breakdown of the allowance that each ad hoc staff is entitled to and a procedure for complain in case there are issues.” Read more here.
