Veteran actress, Genevieve Nnaji has bagged an honour, as her movie effort ‘Lion heart’ gets selected to represent Nigeria in the International Feature Film category of the 2020 Oscars.
Concise News understands that the movie was selected by the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) after a research and subsequent voting of entries received from local filmmakers at home and abroad.
According to NOSC chaired by Chineze Anyaene, ‘Lionheart’ was picked among other movies for its considerable shots at the rules.
Since NOSC’s inauguration in 2014, this is the first time Nigeria is advancing a film to the Oscar, as previous entries received by the committee did not meet basic criteria.
Every year, each country outside the United States is expected to submit one film as long as it’s not primarily in English.
In her reaction, Genevieve, in a post on her Instagram handle said it was an honour to be part of the pivotal moment in the history of Nigerian cinema.
“A moment we know will be replicated as our stories continue to resonate with audiences around the world.” she wrote
“On behalf of the entire LIONHEART team and TEN Productions, we are grateful for this recognition and proud to carry the torch. Thank you all for the love and support thus far.”
Lionheart was produced by Chinny Onwugbenu, Chichi Nwoko, Genevieve Nnaji, and directed by Genevieve Nnaji.
It was acquired on September 7, 2018, as first Netflix original film produced in Nigeria.
The movie features top Nigerian stars such as Pete Edochie, Genevieve Nnaji, Nkem Owoh, Onyeka Onwenu, Kanayo .O. Kanayo, Ngozi Ezeonu, Peter Okoye (P-Square), Phyno among others.
