A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a farmer, Baaki Faga, charged with possession of illegal firearm, be remanded in prison custody, pending legal advice, Concise News reports.
Faga, who resides in Mbaba, Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue, is charged with Illegal Possession of Firearms punishable under Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004.
The Chief Magistrate, Isaac Ajim, who did not take the plea of Faga, for want of jurisdiction, adjourned the matter until Sept 4, 2019 for further mention.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Sgt Friday Kanshio, told the court that the case was transferred from the Aliade Divisional Police Headquarters to the state CID, Makurdi via a letter.
He alleged that the defendant committed the offence on June 19.
Kanshio alleged that a team of policemen led by Sgt. Yakubu Ibrahim, raided Faga’s house and recovered one single barrel gun, seven round of AK 47 live ammunition, one Magazine, one hammer, one cutlass, two cartridges and one axe from the accused person’s residence.
He said that when the defendant was arrested, he voluntarily confessed to committing the crime.
The prosecution informed the court that investigation into the case was still in progress and asked for another date for mention.
