The 2019 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Cup finals will be contested between Assar Omar and Saleh Ahmed (men) and Meshref Dina – Helmy Yousra (women) – all of Egypt.
Concise News reports that in the men’s singles, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri beat Kherouf Sami (Algeria) 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-5) to scoop the competition’s bronze prize at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Monday.
Earlier in the day, Quadri fell to arch-rival, Assar 4-1 (6-11, 8-11, 11-3, 7-11, 3-11) in one of the semi-final matches.
In the women’s singles, Edem Offiong of Nigeria saw off Garci Fadwa (Tunisia) 3-2 (8-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-7, 11-8) in a keenly-contested match to claim third position.
Offiong had succumbed to the superior firepower of top seed, Meshref in the last-four in the morning. Meshref’s victory over the Nigerian meant the 25 year old is on course to claiming a hattrick of the Africa cup.
For three-time African women’s singles champion, Olufunke Oshonaike, the 44 year old settled for sixth in the women’s singles.
The finals will be played later today – in the evening.
With their 2nd runner-up placement, Quadri and Offiong’s secure a podium finish for the host nation – Nigeria.
To the same degree, soon after, the 2019 African Games will be staged in Morocco, a qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The tournament in Lagos is not only event in it’s own right but ideal as part of a preparation itinerary.
