Benue: Buhari Mourns Former Nigerian Minister Ivase

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the Ivase family in Benue, on the exit of Second Republic Minister of Education, Mrs Elizabeth Ivase. Concise News reports that this is contained in a statement by the President’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Monday. Shehu said Buhari described the late minister as a distinguished educationist, grassroots mobiliser, opinion leader and epitome of humility. While noting that Ivase was a pacesetter in many respects, not only in her state and Northern Nigeria but also the country in general, the president commended her commitment to national unity and development. Buhari urged the current crop of politicians and the younger generation, especially women, to draw useful lessons from Ivase’s iron-will to excel by dint of hard work and perseverance. “Indeed, her services to her community, nation and humanity especially, as an advocate of girl-child education and female empowerment, will be remembered for a long time,” he said. Benue Evacuates Students From Taraba Varsity After Killing

The Benue Government announced on Wednesday that it had commenced the evacuation of Benue State students at the Federal University, Wukari in Taraba, Concise News reports. The evacuation followed the closure of the university after the alleged killing of two Benue students in the institution on July 30 by people suspected to be members of the Jukun militia. Hundreds of people have been killed over the years in recurring communal clashes between ethnic Jukun and Tivs in the agricultural belt of Northern Nigeria. The bloody conflict has taken its toll on the two ethnic groups with many lives lost and property estimated at millions of naira destroyed. According to NAN, the Benue Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, said the evacuation of the students was due to the closure of the university. Read more here.
