Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo quit the national team due to long-distant flights from his China base, according to a former international Ike Shorunmi.
The news medium understands that Ighalo retired from the team after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where his five goals helped Nigeria to a bronze medal finish.
And since he made that decision, it has generated diverse reactions from stakeholders in Nigerian football.
According to Shorunmi, it was a bit early for the former Watford man to leave the team as the development came as a surprise.
“The case of Mikel was not so much of a surprise, unlike that of Ighalo, who I felt could still carry on till 2022,” he told Brila FM.
“I think the difficulty of travelling a long distance from China to Nigeria may have caused him to think about ending his national team duties.
“He is getting older and the chances of getting injuries are higher. That can be made worse with long-distance flights from China.”
