The Nigeria Union of Journalists (FCT) Council has described the death of Precious Owolabi as senseless, Concise News understands.
This news medium learned that Precious until his death was a member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) with Channels TV.
He was killed by a stray bullet while covering the protest by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) called Shiites in Abuja.
In a statement by the NUJ in Abuja, it said the development portends danger for the nation’s journalism.
“The death of Precious Owolabi signifies how brutish and short life has become in Nigeria and signposts the danger faced by journalists daily in carrying out the constitutional mandate of holding government and its officials accountable to Nigerians,” the NUJ added.
“The federal government should take responsibility for the senseless death of Owolabi as it was its constitutional duty to safeguard his welfare and security as well as those of other Nigerians.”
It prayed God to comfort the family of the deceased and Channels TV, urging journalists to ensure their safety while working.
The statement, therefore, called on the federal government to address the issues with Shiite members as well as compensate the family of the deceased.
