Some Nigerians have called for the sacking of Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr after the three-time African champions failed to reach the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by losing to Algeria 2-1.
Riyad Mahrez netted a stunning free-kick at the death of the game to land the North Africans in the AFCON final for the first time after 29 years.
Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong had given Algeria the lead through an own goal before Odion Ighalo equalised for Rohr’s men via penalty in the 70th minute.
But with the match heading for extra time, Mahrez fired into the top corner to send the Algerians into raptures and the Nigerians into misery.
The Maghreb nation will face Senegal, who earlier beat Tunisia, in the final on Friday.
Following the game, Nigerians took to Twitter to vent their anger.

It was an overall poor team performance. However, I strongly criticise Rohr’s tactics & players selection. For instance, how do you explain why Nigeria’s most prolific strike in Europe last season (Osimhen) never kicked a ball in Afcon…?

Yeap. You are right, they are young but we need serious improvements in the midfield and keeper positions and Rohr doesn’t seem to have an answer to those 2 areas. Also he is not good in real time adjustments.

Rohr has definitely run his course. Would be nice to see a different approach . He was just too handicap with his reasoning .

So nobody is talking about how rohr spoiled the game with a careless change

Bros my own his tell amaju pinnick that he should thank rohr and get rid of him, the actual truth is this team hasn’t improved from the world cup, just fortunate with opponent his semi final fit is nothing, senegal and Tunisia got the same value for their world cup experience.

Everything is wrong with the team and Rohr should take responsibility! He’s been in charge for years and it looks like he’s lacking in all areas to improve his team . Time for him to use the exit door .

Rohr should get out! Who subs chukwueze of at that point in the game
— Joshua Idoko (@JoshuaIdoko9) July 14, 2019
Gernot Rohr is a gambler
No consistency in his substitutions, onyekuru? Really? When Simon was there?
for the sake of our football, Akpeyi should be sacrificed to appease for his abomination upon the goal keeper position.

Gernot Rohr is not the right man to win cups with Nigeria.. NFF should look towards Amuneke. pic.twitter.com/KJZ2H5CtxW

Not necessarily. It has nothing to do with when, but the circumstances. Against Argentina and Algeria, Rohr could have done better, and he didn’t. Two solid chances, and he din’t learn

Tayo, this is where the journey should end for Rohr. I’m already looking ahead to the future.

I’m not mad at that substitution. Chukwueze hasn’t done anything today. Same as Ahmed Musa, to be honest, but maybe Musa gets a skipper’s reprieve. Or he is in because he actually tries to lay passes in the final 3rd. Or he’s got Rohr’s nudes…

Akpeyi took a step to his left just as Mahrez hit it. An ill-fated step, as it turns out. Nigeria have had a good run. We have a young team, as I’m sure Herr Rohr will point out at the first opportunity he gets.#ALGNGA #Afcon2019

Am just waiting to see Rohr’s reaction now.
— Jonathan Akpoborie (@akpoborie) July 14, 2019
The same Algeria we beat 3-0 and had a draw with during the WCQ, look at how much they’ve improved? That’s the impact of a coach. Rohr has tried his best. Didn’t do too badly. But he is not the future.

The same people that said Keshi (RIP) should be sacked after winning Afcon, same people that insisted that he wasn’t good enough to go to the World Cup are the same people that are saying Rohr that couldn’t make an Afcon final has been very good. pic.twitter.com/BUD1OhsMi8

I am not a fan of firing coaches after tournaments, I believe they should be allowed to build teams. In the case of Rohr, I cannot make such an argument. He’s had his time and the team hardly looks like one that’s had the same manager for years now. Mourinho is still available 😊
