Benue, Cross River Communal Clash Leaves Two Dead

A fight that broke out in the early hours of Wednesday between Tsar community in Vandekya Local Government Area of Benue State and some residents of Obudu Local Government Area in Cross River State has left two persons dead, Concise News reports.

The cause of the rift in Tsar community could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Governor Ben Ayade hails from Obudu LG.

The Permanent Secretary in the Governor Ben Ayade’s office, Dr Alfred Mboto confirmed the incident.

He said, “Security agencies have been deployed from both Benue and Cross River States to the affected area and normalcy has been restored.”

He said dialogue was ongoing between the stakeholders from both communities to bring about a lasting solution.

Mboto said he could not confirm the official casualty figure.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo also confirmed the clash and promised to give further information later.

Hostilities between the people of Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State and their neighbour of Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State is age-long.

In January 2017, a misunderstanding over a portion of farmland between the people of Obudu in Cross River State and their Mgberedem neighbours in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State led to a communal conflict, which left many people dead while several others sustained gunshot injuries.
The following month, two people were allegedly killed during a clash between residents of Mbaduku in Vandeikya Council and Obudu Local Government in Cross River State.

The in August of the same year, a primary school teacher, named Akomaye Betiang was shot in the hand following renewed conflicts between the Bette community in Obudu local government area of northern Cross River State and the Tivs in Vandeikya local government area of southern Benue State.
