It was gathered that Newton previously held the position at Stamford Bridge under Roberto Di Matteo.

However, newly appointed manager Lampard will bring assistants Jody Morris and Chris Jones, who both previously worked at Chelsea, with him from Derby County but the club want to add numbers to their coaching staff following the departure of Maurizio Sarri last month.

The Italian had an entourage of 11 assistants, who have all left with him, while Gianfranco Zola is also expected to move on after rejecting Chelsea’s offer of a new deal.

Newton has over a decade of coaching experience, starting with MK Dons in 2008-09 where he was Roberto Di Matteo’s assistant. The two of them would wind up working together at West Brom, and then at Chelsea as well. Since then, save for a brief spell as interim manager Guus Hiddink’s assistant in 2015-16, Newton had been working behind the scenes at the club, mostly as the main conduit between Chelsea and the Loan Army
