The Nigerian police have called on the public to disregard a viral picture showing embattled Senator Elisha Abbo having a conversation with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu.

The police say they are investigating the Adamawa-North senator after a video of him assaulting a nursing mother had gone viral.

Abbo was caught on a camera installed in a sex toy shop assaulting the woman.

Although the video surfaced online on Tuesday, July 2, the incident was reported to have occurred on 11 May, a month before Abbo was sworn in as senator.

While the police did not deny the authenticity of the aforementioned picture, which they said was taken in Kaduna on 30th April, 2019, they questioned the intentions of those spreading the image at this time.

“Needless to state that the picture was taken in Governor El-Rufai’s office when the IGP paid the Governor a courtesy visit during a Security meeting with the Northern Traditional Rulers in Kaduna on April 30th, 2019,” the police tweeted on Thursday evening.

“Whatever maybe the motive behind the display of the picture at the time when the Senator is under investigation, be it known that the IGP, a public servant, interacts with every Nigerian, irrespective of their status, political leaning, tribe or religion, etc in the course of discharging his duties as the number one Cop of the Nation.”

The lawmaker has since apologised to mothers, Nigerians, his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Assembly, his family, the victim and her family as well as all people who were embarrassed by his conduct.
