Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has stated that the Federal government does not have any gazetted land in the state. He made this known in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase on Monday. He was reacting to Sunday’s press release by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Garba Shehu, claiming that it had gazetted lands in the 36 states of the federation to establish Ruga settlements for herdsmen. The governor insisted that the state government had already made known its stand on the Ruga settlements matter. He maintained that the state would not be part of the project and urged the Federal government to publicly tender documents of the claimed gazetted lands in Benue State to put the matter to rest. At least 30 people have been killed while many others are said to have sustained various degrees of burns after a petrol-laden tanker exploded in Benue State. The explosion occurred on Monday, in Ahumbe Village after the tanker fell along the Aliade–Makurdi highway. One of the men from the fire service was reported to have been seriously burnt while attempting to put out the inferno. While those who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital for treatment, corpses have now been moved to the mortuary. However, some villagers, who had arrived the scene to scoop the product got more than they bargained for as the tanker went up in flames.
