Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) debutant, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and the Super Eagles of Nigeria has conceded that he is not totally comfortable with his role at the Emirates, as he would prefer to play as a central midfielder.
Concise News reports that Iwobi, 23, who is currently representing Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON, has been utilised in a forward position due to the presence of Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira at the London club.
Iwobi revealed he would rather play in the middle of the pitch, but is ready to feature wherever he is needed by manager Unai Emery, according to Goal.
“I’m happy to play anywhere, I will play wherever I’m told to play.
“Growing up I’ve been playing as an attacking midfielder, more central in the midfield. I wouldn’t say if I’m most comfortable there but that’s where I grew up playing.
“I’ve always seen myself as a midfielder but wherever I’m being told to play in the middle or somewhere, I will always give my best.”
In related news, Iwobi believes that Manchester City are the favourites to retain the Premier League title for the third straight season next term.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Iwobi says: “Everyone thought that last season, but Liverpool give them a tough challenge as well. So, you never know what could happen.
“I’m sure every club’s going to invest and try and get their team right. Pre-season’s coming up really soon, so everyone’s trying to get ready for the season to start.
“It’s hard to say right now whether Man City are going to dominate, but they could be favourites, considering they won it again.”
Iwobi and Nigeria face the anxious wait to know who are they are playing in the Round of 16 of the 32nd edition of the AFCON.
