The Super Falcons of Nigeria now have a bright chance of advancing to the Round of 16 after Maria Bonsegundo rescues a point for Argentina at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

Concise News reports that the South Americans recover from a three-goal deficit to deny Scotland qualification to the second round.

With that draw, the Super Falcons remain in third spot in the standings for third-placed teams, and progress to the Round of 16 is more certain now than ever.

The Super Falcons have been unable to dominate beyond Africa in such arenas as the FIFA Women’s World Cup or the Olympic Games. The team has been to every World Cup since 1991 but managed just once to finish in the top eight.

England and Japan qualify from Group D as winners and runners-up respectively.

Group D: Japan 0-2 England, Scotland 3-3 Argentina

Now, attention turns to Thursday’s matches.

New Zealand must hold Cameroon or if either side wins, it must not be by more than three goals.

Thailand, who have conceded 17 goals already, should not lose by over three goals to Chile.

See the current standings of third-placed teams:

1. Brazil (6 points, +3 goal difference)
2. China PR (4 points, 0 goal difference)
3. Nigeria (3 points, -2 goal difference)
4. Argentina (2 points, -1 goal difference)
5. Cameroon (0 point, -3 goal difference)
6. Chile (0 point, -5 goal difference)

Brazil and China People’s Republic have no worries as they have already passed the test to the knockout stages.

All group matches will be concluded by Thursday, June 20.
