Transfer News: Messi’s Barcelona Push To Sign Ronaldo’s Portugal Teammate

As clubs continue to seal transfer deals ahead of the new season, Lionel Messi‘s Barcelona are determined to sign an alternative to Jordi Alba this summer and that has led them to Borussia Dortmund and Portugal left-back Raphael Guerreiro, a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo, Concise News reports.

The Portuguese would not only compete with Alba but, with his contract coming to an end in 2020, he should be available at a reasonable cost.

Not only can Guerreiro play at left-back but he can also feature in midfield, as he often has done at Dortmund.

Until now, Filipe Luis seemed the most likely option to arrive as his contract with Atletico Madrid is set to expire on June 30, but the 25-year-old has now forced his way into Barcelona’s thinking.

It should be recalled that Barcelona finished the 2018/19 season without cover at left-back.

Their problems were exposed by right-back Nelson Semedo, who had to try and adapt to that position when Alba could not play.

Guerreiro, a Caen academy graduate first shot into the spotlight with his brilliant performances for Portugal in the 2016 Euros. He started in the final against France, playing the entire 120 minutes and helping his country win its first major international tournament.

He also played in the recent UEFA Nations League final win over the Netherlands.

With Dortmund recently announcing the signing of Germany left-back Nico Schulz from Hoffenheim, Guerreiro’s opportunities at the Signal Iduna Park will only further reduce.

Barcelona, on the other hand, only have one true left back in 30-year-old Alba, with Samuel Umtiti sometimes slotting in.

The Blaugrana could definitely use some additional depth, and Ernesto Valverde will be confident in luring Guerreiro to the Camp Nou.

A fee of €25 million has been quoted, which would be a reasonable fee for a player of Guerreiro’s calibre. With Dortmund having sufficient options at left back, Lucien Favre could be persuaded to let the player leave.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are still being linked with Antoine Griezmann – with rumours persisting.
