Copa America 2019: Falcao Backs Much-Criticised Messi In Passionate Defence

Lionel Messi has not avoided the critics after Argentina began their Copa America 2019 campaign with a defeat against Colombia, but his rival, Radamel Falcao has backed him, analysing why the Albiceleste skipper is not to be blamed for the loss.

Concise News reports that the former Chelsea striker insisted that fans should be less demanding of the Barcelona ace, despite struggles to replicate his form at club level in an Argentina shirt.

“If he scores a goal, they ask him for two,” Falcao explains.

“If he scores a free-kick, they say the wall wasn’t lined up correctly.

“If Argentina loses, they talk about it being his fault, it’s the price he has to pay for being the best in the world.”

However, Falcao was clearly concerned by the threat posed by Messi throughout their clash.

“Messi was close to turning us over, I’m sure he will in the next two games,” he insists.

“For us, we can’t think we are candidates just because we beat Messi’s Argentina, there’s still work to do.”

The defeat for Argentina puts the pressure on Lionel Scaloni’s side in the second group stage fixture as Argentina will face Paraguay, who drew with Qatar in their opening encounter.
