Benue State Police Command has smashed an eight-man gang suspected to be involved in recent cult-related attacks, killings and robberies in Otukpo and its environs in the Benue South district, following a gun duel.
Concise News reports that parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Makurdi, the State Police Commissioner, Omololu Bishi, explained that the cult members had recently been involved in robberies and also engaged his personnel in exchange of gunfire.
“They are suspected to be involved in several cases of armed robbery and culpable homicide. In one of the robbery cases, they engaged our men in a shoot-out along Otukpo-Ado road,” the police helmsman said.
“They were, however, arrested and after an on the spot search, two locally made pistols, two expended cartridges, one AK-47 bayonet and one camouflage shirt was recovered from them.”
Also paraded by the Police Commissioner was a five-man robbery gang that specialised in robbing unsuspecting motorists on the busy Ugbema junction in Buruku Local Government Area of the state.
Furthermore, Bishi explained that “members of the gang were arrested after a distress call from a victim, who said the gang blocked the road along Abakwa in Buruku Local Government Area where they were robbing motorists of their belongings. Our officers rushed to the scene and sighted the robbers who took to their heels.
“Further investigation, however, led to the arrest of Kumater Orduen, Terhemen Dev, Terna Atama, Terdoo Abata and Felix Iorgube, all of Mbagen in Buruku Local Government Area.”
He said items recovered from the gangs were 12 different firearms, five live cartridges, two expended cartridges, 11 live ammunition, one knife and assorted phones. He said the suspects would be arraigned in court at the end of investigations.
