French club Rennes came from behind to defeat Arsenal 3-1 in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 fixture on Thursday night.
The Gunners took an early lead in the third minute when Alex Iwobi’s cross went in off the post.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos red card after picking up two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes changed the course of things for the London side as Benjamin Bourigeaud then drew his side level with a stunning strike before an unfortunate Nacho Monreal own goal put the home side ahead.
Ismaila Sarr’s diving header in the closing stages compounded a miserable evening for Arsenal.
Arsenal will now hope to repeat their heroics from the last-32 stage, where they overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Belarus side Bate Borisov to progress with a 3-0 home victory.
