Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Wednesday failed to reach the final of the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Niger Republic after losing 4-3 on penalties to Mali in the semi-finals.
The two sides had played out an enthralling 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Stade General Seyni Kountche Stadium in Niamey before the shootout.
Mali’s El Bilal Toure converted the decisive penalty that ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the final.
Mamadou Traore opened scoring for the Malians in the 78th minute, before substitute Paschal Durugbor equalised for Paul Aigbogun’s lads with five minutes left to play.
In the day’s other semi-final match, Givemore Khupe scored an own goal to give Senegal a 1-0 win over South Africa to set up an all west African final with Mali on Sunday.
Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and South Africa had booked their places in this year’s Fifa U-20 World Cup by virtue of their semi-final berths in the youth Afcon.
