Bolanle Ambode, the wife of Lagos State Governor, has called on government to equip Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) with necessary skills for safe delivery.
She said this would help to address high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria.
Ambode made the call on Wednesday at the 41st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference organised by Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) in Lagos.
She was represented by Dr Ibironke Sodeinde.
Ambode said TBAs needed to have knowledge on how to identify when deliveries became complicated and when to transfer to a secondary health facilities to avoid casualties.
According to her, TBAs have become an integral part of healthcare services in Nigeria.
She commended Lagos State Government for efforts put in place to raise the standards of healthcare facilities within the state.
Ambode called on corporate organisations to partner governments in reducing maternal and infant mortality in the country.
