Former Nigeria head coach Christian Chukwu has said that John Mikel Obi’s absence from the crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with South Africa would not affect the team negatively.
The Super Eagles will engage the Bafana Bafana on 17 November in a Group E fixture in Johannesburg.
Nigeria are seeking victory in the southern African country to confirm their place in next year’s tournament in Cameroun.
The Eagles had brightened their chances of qualifying for their first Afcon since 2013 after spanking Seychelles 3-0 on the road, and recording back-to-back wins against Libya in the wake of a shocking home defeat to South Africa in June last year.
And the former Green Eagles captain is confident the team would get the better of South Africa in front of their fans.
“We should remember that Mikel was not in the match against Libya and yet Nigeria came out victorious,” he told NAN.
“So, his absence in the South Africa match may not have any negative impact on the team.’’
