Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has replaced ailing Francis Uzoho with Enyimba shot stopper Theophilus Afelokhai for a crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nation’s qualifying clash with South Africa.
Uzoho, one of the three goalkeepers invited for the Group E match on 17 November in Johannesburg, suffered a concussion while manning the goal for his Spanish club Elche, who were beaten 5-1 by Cadiz on Sunday.
Official: @EnyimbaFC’s shot-stopper Theophilus Afelokhai replaces injured @Uzohof for @NGSuperEagles 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against @BafanaBafana of South Africa #SoarSuperEagles #Afcon2019Q #Team9jaStrong #RSANGA,” the Nigeria Football Federation tweeted on Tuesday morning.
Afelokhai, 30, was in superlative form for Enyimba in last season’s Caf Confederation Cup, where they lost to Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in the semi-finals.
The Super Eagles lead the group on 9 points, while Bafana Bafana, who stunned the Eagles in the first leg in Uyo, are in second position with eight points.
