Shehu Sani Reveals Why APC Senators Can't Impeach Saraki
Senator Shehu Sani

The senator representing Kaduna Central at the Nigerian Senate, Shehu Sani, says it is impossible for senators on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki because they do not have the numbers.

Concise News reports that since the nation’s number three citizen defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, he has been under pressure to resign.

The APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole had insisted that the Senate President would be removed “according to the law and democratic norms”.

In October, the Senate President reportedly struck a deal with APC senators to stop his impeachment.

Speaking on Saraki’s planned impeachment, Sani told journalists on Sunday that it would be difficult to remove the Senate President because he has been able to carry everyone along including his opponents.

His words: “It is technically impossible to remove Saraki because the APC does not have two-thirds majority in the national assembly,” the lawmaker said.

“Secondly, Saraki has been able to carry everybody along and provide a leadership to the extent that he is able to accommodate those who are critical of him.

“Thirdly, the opposition are more united and more formidable in their resolve to keep the Senate President than the ruling party in their plot to remove the Senate President.

“So, I can tell you that removing Saraki through constitutional means is very much impossible because the APC is not united to do that. The APC is not having the number to do that and the APC does not have the kind of support it needed to be able to carry out the plot.

“I can tell that APC back out from plot to remove Saraki because they don’t have the number to do that and it is impossible to do that through constitutional means.”

Meanwhile, Senator Sani resigned his membership of the APC in protest in October and joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) due to his inability to secure the ticket of the APC for the 2019 elections despite assurances from the national working committee of the party.
