Civil society organisations, human rights activists and students Thursday staged a peaceful march in Abuja to demand justice for late Ochanya Ogbanje.
The 13-year-old died on 17 October due to Vesico Vagina Fistula (VVF) complications after she was allegedly raped by a lecturer Andrew Ogbuja and his son in Ugbokolo, Benue state.
Concise News understands that the girl, who is said to be a cousin of the lecturer’s wife, was allegedly raped by the lecturer for the three years she lived with them.
The lecturer is the Head of Department, Catering and Hotel Management at the Benue State Polytechnic, and his son, Victor Inalegwu Ogbuja, is a final-year student of Animal Production at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
Until her death, Ochanya attended the Federal Government College, Gboko, Benue. She was a Junior Secondary School 1 student.
Her death sparked outrage and relentless calls for justice.
Protesters gathered at the Unity Fountain, Abuja calling on the federal government to prosecute the suspects.
“We want the Minister of Justice to expedite action and ensure that justice is delivered. This is because an injustice to one is an injustice to all,” Coordinator for #Justice4Ochanya, Great Felix, said while addressing protesters.
They further marched to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
