The youth arm of the Igbo socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo has commended the presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party for the 2019 elections, Atiku Abubakar, for choosing Peter Obi as his his running mate.
Acting National President of the group Dr Kingsley Dozie and Emeka Odom made this known on Sunday in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
Atiku, a former vice president, opted for obi, a former governor of Anambra state, as his running mate on Friday after a closed-door meeting.
But governors on the platform of the PDP in the southeast, from where Obi hails, have distanced themselves from Atiku’s nomination of Obi as Nigeria’s number two citizen.
Making this known on Saturday after a meeting in Enugu, the governors, who also met with other leaders of the sub-region, said the national body of the party and Atiku did not consult them before picking Obi.
However, the youth wing of Ohanaeze appears to see nothing wrong with Obi’s emergence as Akitu’s number two.
It said that assistance of Igbo youths would be made available to the PDP having chosen someone from their zone.
“The choice of the former governor, Peter Obi is great. He was not wasteful in the management of resources while serving as governor,” it said in a statement.
“Peter Obi is a good choice. He will bring business intelligence into governance.
“He is not corrupt and as a governor, he was not wasteful. Igbo youths are very happy .
It also said: “Obi’s success story as a businessman would help in reviving the nation’s economy if elected in 2019.”
“The decision to pick him, we believe, is based on his outstanding performance as governor of Anambra state.”
