Nigeria’s women basketball team, D’Tigress, have moved 15 places from 34th to 19th in the latest Fiba world ranking.
This comes after the team’s historic outing at the Fiba Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain.
The reigning African champions stunned the basketball world by winning three consecutive games to become the first African side to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.
The D’Tigress, who also retained their second position in Africa behind the continent’s highest-ranked team, Senegal (17), got 76.6 points.
Belgium, China, Japan and Latvia are the other teams who moved up in the ranking released on Friday.
Meanwhile, world champions United States remains the top team, followed by Spain, Australia, France and Canada in the top five.
After tipping off their campaign with Australia on a losing note in Tenerife, Spain, Otis Hughley’s side responded with three back-to-back wins.
They got the better of Turkey 74-68; overcame Argentina 75-70; and edged Greece 57-56 in a nail-biting contest.
The Nigerian ladies were eventually stopped by the defending champions and huge tournament favourites, the United States, who emerged winners of the tournament.
