Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a governorship aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, appears to have said that his party rigged to win the Osun governorship poll.
It was learned that the APC aspirant, who is barely 48 hours away from going head-to-head against the incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for the party’s ticket, explicitly said his party won the election in a crooked and unenviable manner.
This may have landed him in trouble as Sanwo-Olu is purportedly being supported by the Mandate Group loyal to National Leader of the APC Bola Tinubu.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday morning declared Gboyega Oyetola the winner of the Osun election after two ballots.
Oyetola was declared winner after the collation of the results of the supplementary election in seven polling units at the head office of the commission in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.
INEC Returning Officer Prof. Joseph Fuwape said Oyetola polled 255,505 votes to defeat Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who had 255,023 votes.
The PDP candidate was leading by a margin of 325 votes in the election which held on 22 September but INEC declared the exercise inconclusive, saying the requirements for a winner to be declared were not met.
After the supplementary poll, the electoral umpire announced that APC polled 1,160 votes in the rerun while PDP secured 325 votes, leaving a margin of 835.
But the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has since rejected the outcome of the poll, vowing to challenge it at the election tribunal.
The party accused the ruling APC of partnering INEC to rig the re-run election.
There were reports of violence at some polling units in the four local government areas where the election was held.
Hoodlums were reported to have taken over Polling Unit One, Ward Eight in Orolu area of the state in spite of the presence of many security operatives.
Some accredited journalists and election observers were not allowed to cover the poll at some units.
And in his reaction to the Osun poll, Sanwo-Olu, in a Whatsapp message on Sanwo-Olu 4 Gov. Lagos appears to have said his party won the Osun election in a crooked and unenviable manner.
In the message sent at exactly 6.42pm on Thursday with an Airtel line, Sanwo-Olu purportedly said: “as much (as) I want our great party APC to win in Osun, am not happy with the way adopted to win. It shows we have no principle and no different from PDP…”
But Sanwo-Olu has denied ever saying that he accused his party of rigging to win the Osun governorship election.
In his reaction, the governorship aspirant described the report as fake news being spread by those desperately working to stop him from winning the party’s ticket.
”Sanwo-Olu in big trouble story by the faceless and gormless Lagos Solidarity Forum should win the award for the biggest
#FakeNews of the year. It is another pack of conjured lies from the pit of hell from the stable of a very desperate people. It fits only for the trash can,” he tweeted.
”I urge all our loyal APC supporters to ignore such baseless accusations from faceless and desperate shadowy groups. We are aware that more of such asinine rants will come from desperate groups, but we are undeterred, focused on our goal. ÌGBÉGA ÈKÓ TI DI ÀJÙMỌ̀ṢE,” he added.
