INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

A total of 14 million new voters have been registered across the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who revealed this at a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja on Thursday said they were registered within 16 months under the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.

With 14 million more Nigerians registered to vote, Professor Yakubu said the total number of voters registered by the commission now stands at 84 million.

According to the INEC boss, the number of those who took part in the CVR exercise which ended last week Friday represented a 21 percent increase in the total figure of eligible voters in the country.
