Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has been injured while training with Brazil ahead of their World Cup warm-up game against Austria on Sunday.
The Manchester United bound player suffered a “trauma in his ankle” while training with Brazil on Thursday, national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has said.
The doctor added: “Tomorrow we watch to see what happens and then decide if we need to do any exams or not but at the moment it is too early to say anything about him.”
Fred passed a medical with United on Monday ahead of a proposed £50m-plus move to Old Trafford.
Brazil have been training at Tottenham’s training ground and Fred was caught on the ankle by international team-mate Casemiro on Thursday.
The 24-year-old subsequently required ice treatment and had to sit out the remainder of the session.
Brazil defender Marcelo hopes Fred’s injury is nothing serious and that he will be back amongst the squad sooner rather than later.
“This is the World Cup, everyone is training hard and working hard,” said Marcelo.
“I believe that it is not that bad, it is not a big issue and he will be back with us as soon as possible.”
