Police in Southern India have arrested a 60-year-old businessman who sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl and her mother in a cinema.
The man identified as KV Moitheenkutty, was arrested after a CCTV footage revealed that he committed the offence in Edappal, Kerala, April, 2018.
It was gathered that the man was previously accused of assaulting the mother and her daughter but he refuted the allegation.
The Cinema staff who had earlier contacted the police as soon as investigations via the camera confirmed the assault, said the police did not react.
This then prompted them to hand it over to a TV media, who aired it, thereby, pushing the police to act immediately.
The Hindu reported that the 60-year-old man who owns several jewelry shops, confessed after watching to footage.
The Gulf News learnt that a sub-inspector was suspended for attempting to let the story slide.
“We had checked the entire footage. He was abusing the mother and child at the same time, from the beginning to the end,” a spokesman for childline said.
“During the movie interval, he stops, goes out and then comes back to resume the sexual assault. After informing the police, we approached them every day to follow up. We waited till Saturday as we thought that the police should be given time to trace him. Still, they didn’t act,” he added.
The 60-year-old jeweller has, however, been charged with sexual assault.
