Lawmakers in South Africa have elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s president following the resignation of embattled leader Jacob Zuma on Wednesday.

Zuma bowed to intense pressure from his party, ANC, to step down amid allegations of corruption.

In a televised statement he said he was quitting with immediate effect but said he disagreed with the party’s decision.

Zuma faces numerous corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.
