The Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos state has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to halt the implementation of the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law, 2018.

Recall that the law, which was signed last week, mandates candidates seeking admission to tertiary institutions owned by the state to possess a credit pass in Yoruba language.

But in a statement by the PDP on Tuesday, the party described the law as a “reflection of APC’s acts of ethnocentrism and alienation in the state.”

The statement however added that the PDP “supports the promotion of Yoruba language and culture and that of other Nigerian languages and cultures, especially in cosmopolitan Lagos, but the lack of due considerations by the Lagos State House of Assembly in making and passing the bill, again gives doubts on the competence of the House to deliver flawless legislation.”
