The sequel to box-office Nigerian romantic-comedy, ‘The Wedding Party 2’ has made a record-breaking N467 million gross, emerging the highest grossing movie in Nigeria.
The current worldwide gross of the movie was announced on CEO EbonyLife Films, Mo Abudu’s Instagram page on Monday.
She wrote: “Yipee! Lord we thank you. ???The Wedding Party 2 – Destination Dubai is now the highest grossing Nollywood movie of all time.
“Breaking the record we had last year. A big thank you to everyone that has contributed to this recording breaking achievement. ??? God bless and keep you all and may you all continue to break global records in all you do ??. #TWP2 is still showing in cinemas nationwide, so you can still watch it with friends and loved ones.”
The sequel to the movie is a partnership between Ebony Films, FilmOne Distribution, Inkblot Productions and Konga Studio.
The movie tagged The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai (TWP 2) has earned N412 million at the Nigerian box-office and N55 million outside the country.
It has enjoyed a great response with audiences in East Africa, UK, Liberia and South Africa.
Mo Abudu said: “The success of TWP 2 is further proof that Nigerians are willing to watch quality Nollywood movies in cinemas. We are so thrilled by how much viewers have embraced it. The entire filmmaking process was intense and exhilarating; we couldn’t have asked for a better response to the finished product.”
Mo isn’t the only one who is excited about the success of the movie, COO of FilmOne Distribution is also excited about this.
“We definitely hoped for this level of success in and out of Nigeria; however, it has been astounding to see, particularly in light of the international blockbuster movies TWP 2 had to contend with at cinemas – Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji, Pitch Perfect 3, Ferdinand and Paddington. We look forward to the film opening soon in the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and the Middle East,” he said.
