The next edition of The Headies awards, Nigeria’s longest-running music awards, will hold in March 2018 with four new categories.
This was disclosed in a statement released on HIP TV by the executive producer of the awards, Ayo Animashaun, on Thursday.
Animashaun revealed that this change is to return the awards to a first-quarter-of-the-year event.
Headies started in 2006 and was held annually in March before the organisers moved it to the last quarter of the year.
Organisers of the awards revealed that their decision to revert to the old Quarter was based on studied schedule of song releases and talents availability.
“We want our nominees, artistes, entertainment industry practitioners and enthusiasts ‘ to have an amazing time and music fans to have even more fun. This is why we have taken every decision; from the new date, choice of venue, categories, and so on,” Animashaun said.
The new categories added to the awards are Headies Viewer’s Choice, Industry Brand Supporter, Best Performer and Best Songwriter of the year.
Fans will decide who takes home the Viewer’s Choice prize through a voting system.
The Headies now headlines 24 award categories with each winner archiving a 21 carat gold-plated plaque.
