Femi Falana (SAN) has called the federal government to effect the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zainab.
El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zainab, have been in detention since their arrest by operatives of the Department of State Service in December 2015.
They were arrested following a clash between followers of the group and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army State, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria, Kaduna state.
Falana called on the government to be humane in its treatment of the Muslim cleric.
This plea is contained in a letter written by the legal luminary and addressed to the president. The letter, dated November 7, 2017 is the second of such written by Falana.
The first, written on June 2, 2017 was addressed to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who was at the time the Acting President of the federation.
The letter reminded the President that the continued detention of the couple is in violation of a December 2, 2016 judgment given by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court had ordered the immediate release of the cleric and his wife but the government ignored this.
He appealed for mercy and asked that El-Zakzaky be allowed out in order to tend properly to his health, a plea he said President Buhari should understand following his recent health-related vacation in the UK.
