Service is the master key to greatness! Serving God and serving in church is the master key to greatness.
Text: Mark 10: 35. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. 36. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? 37. They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 38. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39. And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: 40. But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. 41. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. 42. But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 43. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44. And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said: “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college education to serve. You don’t even have to make your subjects and verbs agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace.”
What is service?
Service is the action, deed of helping or carrying out a task for someone.
Service is a valuable action, deed or effort performed to satisfy a need or to fulfill a demand.
Service is working for somebody and performing one’s duties.
Christian service is working for God and His house and performing your duties in the church.
Kingdom service is doing one thing or another in the church to advance the cause of the Kingdom.
Take note: Everything can be a resource for serving God – Rebbe Nachman
God expects us to serve in His house because He has placed in us some salient and silent gifts for the usefulness of your church. 1st Peter 4:10. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
The church of God is likened to a body with many Parts. Ephesians 4: 4. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 7. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 16. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
We are all parts of the Body of Christ and each of us has unique functions. When we refuse to function, other parts of the body suffer.
1. Your service in church is a way you can invest in the members of your church:
Matthew: 25. 35. For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36. Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38. When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39. Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40. And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Your service in God’s house is an investment into the lives of your brethren which pays great dividend.
Investment in our brethren in service is an investment into God and God wouldn’t overlook it. God has promised to repay us as we read in Matt 25:35-40.
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others – Mahatma Gandhi
2. Your service gives you an opportunity to give back:
Acts 20: 35 – I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
God has been good to us all and the best way to show our appreciation to God is to serve others. Withholding your service to your church is a way of saying you are not grateful.
3. Service helps you learn a lot:
Church, through your active service, is one of the best places to learn.
Many have gone on to use what they have learnt in church to better their lot in life. As you serve, you discover hidden talents that will change your view on your self worth.
Serving God enhances your self worth and confidence.
Community service has taught me all kinds of skills and increased my confidence. You go out there and think on your feet, work with others and create something from nothing. That’s what life’s all about. – Andrew Shue
4. Your service strengthens your church:
Many Christians want their church to be powerful and reach many people but are unwilling to pay the price. The price for the greatness of your church is your uncommon dedication to service. Your inactiveness is the reason for your church backwardness and stagnation.
Your church is only as powerful as your active and faithful service. Many Christians have joined the devil to weaken their church by refusing to serve. Stop being an instrument in the hand of Satan, give yourself to service and see God use you to strengthen your church.
