Rafiqul Islam, 30, is facing a life imprisonment charge, for chopping off his wife’s fingers reportedly to stop his wife’s education.
According to The Times, his wife Hawa Akhter, 21, said Islam taped her mouth and blindfolded her, under the pretext that he was going to surprise her with a gift.
It was learnt from her relative that Akhter stretched out her fingers and he cut them off.
Islam, who works in the United Arab Emirates as a migrant worker, warned his wife about dire consequences if she attempts to study further.
Akter said: “After he came back to Bangladesh, he wanted to have a discussion with me.
“Suddenly, he blindfolded me and tied my hand. He also taped my mouth saying that he would give me some surprise gifts. But, instead he cut off my fingers.”
The Bangladesh police chief, Mohammed Saluddin said Islam confessed after he was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration.
He also said human rights groups are demanding life imprisonment, adding that the victim, who has returned to her parent’s house, is learning to write with her left hand and is determined to continue with her education
