Women of Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have stormed Abakaliki to protest against the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the area.
The women who were seen in the capital city of the state on Wednesday with placards alleged that a herdsman raped a 70-year-old widow of the community into coma.
How she was raped
Florence Okoro who led the mass protest explained that the herdsman invaded the old widow’s house and raped her while she was preparing her dinner.
She disclosed that the old woman’s legs were broken as she was struggling to escape from the hands of the herdsman.
The women leader therefore appealed to the state government and security agencies to protect the women in the state against the herdsmen who they said have been destroying the crops on their farmlands.
Responding to their protest, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Emmanuel Okorie, condemned the activities of the herdsmen in the area, saying, ”It’s annoying that Fulani herdsmen, instead of taking care of their cattle, are touching you. What is expected to be done for you to be happy, our governor will do it.”
The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Augustine Nwankwegu, also condemned the rape of the widow and the destruction of farmlands by herdsmen.
He assured the protesters that the government would take action against the perpetrators of the crime.
