The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Monday, said President Muhammadu Buhari and his medical doctors are the only competent set of people who could say why he sought treatment in a foreign hospital.
The minister said this in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Central Pharmacy Store and Maternity Building at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.
He said the President might have travelled abroad as a matter of choice or on the advice of his doctors.
According to him, people travelling abroad for medical care are doing so either because of the “bonding” that might be existing between them and their doctors, or “just a matter of choice.”
He explained that when a patient is used to a particular doctor, such a patient might not want to be examined by another doctor even when his own doctor is not around.
The minister added that patients always exhibit this trait because “they don’t want to start all over again with another doctor.”
When asked if that was the reason the President travelled abroad for treatment, the minister said president Buhari and his doctors were the ones who could answer the question.
Meanwhile, the minister commended the management and staff of the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital for doing what he described as a wonderful job but he said their feats were largely under-reported.
He also promised to ensure the clearance of the two containers of hospital consumables imported by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, for the OAUTHC.
